In Lisbon, many international families – and some Portuguese families too – reach a crossroads when preschool comes to an end. The choice between a Portuguese-language school and an international school is a real one, and it deserves a thoughtful answer.
The problem is that, too often, the decision is shaped by reputation, by what other families are doing, or by a vague fear of falling behind.
The right choice is not the one with the strongest label. It is the one that fits the family’s real life and the child’s personality.
The central question is not “which one is better?”
The central question is: where is the family likely to be in the next few years?
If life in Portugal is likely to continue, a Portuguese-language school can be a very strong anchor for integration. The child develops a sense of belonging, makes local friends and gains fluency in the language of the country where they live. That fluency brings independence.
If the family expects to move internationally in the short term, an international school may make sense for reasons of curricular continuity and future transitions. Even so, it is always worth looking at the child’s day-to-day experience, not only at the curriculum.
What changes for the child
Language is not just a tool. It is where the child thinks, learns and builds confidence. If the child is still consolidating a language, changing the language of learning can be demanding. Some children adapt well. Others become quieter, more anxious and less available to learn – not because they lack ability, but because they are tired.
So, more than simply saying “English is important”, what matters is understanding how the child is experiencing learning at this stage.
How to decide without falling into extremes
There is a simple exercise: imagine your child one year from now. In which scenario do they seem calmer when waking up and going to school? In which scenario do they seem more able to ask for help, make friends and feel that they belong?
Then look at the school itself – not just the label. Lisbon has excellent international schools and excellent Portuguese-language schools, but not every school will suit every child. Here too, each case is different: the “type” of school does not answer everything.
